Consortium for Lead Battery Leadership

The Consortium for Lead Battery Leadership brings together industry leaders and national labs to advance lead battery technology. With a focus on improving storage capacity and reducing costs, this collaboration aims to enhance energy storage solutions for a sustainable, resilient future.

Advancing Grid-Scale Energy Storage through BCI’s Consortium for Lead Battery Leadership

The BCI Consortium for Lead Battery Leadership (CLBL) is a bold, federally supported collaboration bringing together industry leaders and national laboratories to unlock the next generation of lead battery performance. Backed by a $5 million Department of Energy grant, the CLBL is focused on achieving 10+ hours of storage capacity and driving down costs through materials science, rigorous research, and techno-economic analysis. The CLBL pursues the following areas of focus:

  • Advances lead battery performance for long-duration energy storage through a powerful collaboration among BCI, CBI, lead battery manufacturers, and national laboratories with a clear goal of improving storage capacity and reducing costs at scale.
  • Unites BCI member companies — including Advanced Battery Concepts, C&D/Trojan, Clarios, Crown Battery, East Penn Manufacturing, EnerSys, Gridtential, and Stryten Energy — to deliver industry-led innovation that strengthens American energy leadership.
  • Partners with Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to conduct world-class research and techno-economic analysis that validates long-duration energy storage solutions.
  • Demonstrates the viability of lead batteries as a cost-effective, long-duration storage solution, contributing to a cleaner, more resilient energy grid and reinforcing the industry’s role in America’s sustainable energy future.
